A Teacher’s Experience of this Workshop:

My experience of this work far exceeded anything I ever expected. The depth of knowledge from Narelle is quite extraordinary and beautiful her use of language really made me embrace my scoliosis in a way I don't think I consciously had. Where I had looked upon my back as this complicated entity I'd have to unravel, I am now totally in love with intrigue and enjoying the process of discovering more about the inner terrain that had been a mystery for a long time.

I have worked with many teachers over the years but no one is teaching this stuff. Its very unique and powerful. I was challenged in a way I hadn't been before. Although I have a strong practice and awareness of how I work with my spine, this work shone a very different light and bought a very different dimensional essence to my practice that was deliberate, very specific and made complete sense. The pause, the breath, the silence - if moments could be held in a capsule I would save them forever.

Where a scoliosis can make you feel lost within your own internal mapping and feeling is slightly skewed, she has a way of supporting a sense of coming back to the self through the interweaving of these very intricate explorations encouraging awareness and balance that is often missing in a scoliotic body.

Her no nonsense style keeps you totally accountable for yourself in this journey of recalibration and discovery. Really I'll be eternally grateful to this human forever. As a woman she made us feel safe and nurtured to express and share our experiences. For someone who is so very yang as myself it was delicious to be in the soft but strong feminine energy of Narelle.”

Yoga for scoliosis Workshops

Your spine is a long curving river. Within the experience of asymmetry, and indeed, in all spinal terrains, it is important to sense the course of the river, the riverbanks, the surrounding country. To encounter the inflow of the tributaries of the limbs, and observe their impact on the course of the river-spine.

In this unique Workshop, we will explore the felt experience of asymmetry (however subtle), in the midline of the body. Through careful sensing, you will be invited to know the country and topography of your back as felt, known place. We will investigate the ways in which the active use of the limbs can inform and modify this landscape, generating more easeful energetic flow through the spine as your central, functional axis. A place of cohesion and resilience, fluidity and strength. Through conscious acknowledgement of the organic body and the embryological pathways of both the limbs and spine itself, we will offer your body fresh choices in finding its natural state of grace, balance and ease. Expect to come away with playful, yet deep, enquiries that will ignite your curiosity about your spine in the practice of yogasana.

Narelle Carter-Quinlan is a global leading exponent on yoga for scoliosis. She is the only yoga teacher in the Southern Hemisphere to specialise in yoga for the asymmetric spine. An Anatomist by formal academic training and research, Narelle has taught yoga for scoliosis and Backcare in New York City, San Fransisco, throughout Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and of course in her native Australia. A photographer, writer, and dancemaker, her work seeks to offer the yoga practitioner important kinaesthetic information through image and metaphor, transforming and healing the yogi’s relationship with the body-land and our greater ecology. She slow travels as a chosen way of life.

Note: this Workshop is suitable for students with a minimum of six months consistent yoga practice, up to Teacher level. It is not suitable for those working with acute spinal injury or pathology. Students with back pain are very welcome, with or without spinal asymmetry. In essence, this is a Workshop for anyone with a spine, who delights in the practice of yoga!

Yoga for your Strong, Resilient Bones - Asana and Osteoporosis

A Workshop exploring the wonders of your bony architecture.

Our bones give us shape and line and form.
We sculpt space and carve time as we move through our bones. Bones offer us direction, clarity and intent.
Through our bones, we are in constant conversation with gravity as we rise and fall in an ongoing dance with gravity, all sequenced through our living bones.

As we practice yoga through the original blueprint of the Spiral lines within our bones, formed as an embryo, we find new pathways through the the limbs, to offer length and decompression to the spine. By looking at the simple anatomy and layers of bone, together with the principles of bone remodelling, our asana practice becomes effortless and light. Filled with grace, ease and poise. Building strength and integrity in the bony form.

In working with standing asana and supported partial standing poses as our foundation, we acknowledge the felt relationship of bones with rocks; the bones of the earth. By looking at photographic images of the landscape, we embody the echo of bone-rock-gravity in yoga.

The rocks of this planet echo the bones in our own body. Our body has its own canyons, ridges and escarpments.
When we touch rock, our bones vibrate in resonance. Sister tissues, they love each other.

Expect to come away with a new relationship with your bones in yoga practice, and fresh, functional and poetic ways of imagining the body landscape.
All, generating strong, resilient bones.

Yoga and The Spine - other Workshops and Trainings.

My Signature Workshops include:

  • Yoga for Scoliosis; Yoga and the Asymmetric Spine. Introductory, Continuing / Advanced Workshops.
During these Workshops you will learn about the anatomy of asymmetry and its structural and functional sequelae, the different patterns of scoliosis, how to see and read the body, together with the rationale and principles of practice within the asymmetric spine. With an emphasis on asana that offer the body support, traction, derotation, and stability you will discover how to offer the asymmetric spine penetrative and incisive change within its structure, whilst simultaneously offering deep rebalance to the nervous and fluid systems.

  • Yoga for Backcare. Yoga and Back Pain.
A workshop considering the anatomy, pathology, and impact of disc and facet lesions, the sacroiliac joint and spinal stability. You will learn ways to practice yoga that offer the body space, ease and pain relief, whilst rebuilding spinal stability and deep integration.

  • Body Earth Yoga

This delicious Workshop experience employs my photographic images as a means for Participants to encounter and engage with their own felt experience of the body in relationship to Place. In particular we look at the relationship of Sand to Connective Tissue, the echo of the Bones and Rocks, and particularly, the flow of the body’s internal Fluid Field. Through the application of anatomy together with images of sand, rock, water, within Asana Practice, Participants are challenged and invited to a new and deep awareness of their inner terrain, offering new pathways for cohesion in movement, in support of functional ease within the Spine and the body as a Whole integrated organism.

Other Workshop Offerings:

  • Yoga and Spinal Support from the Organs.
Whilst the skeletal system is the scaffolding and framework of the architecture of the body, it is though the lush and organic support of the soft tissues of the organs, that we can ask the integrated body to work in a more holistic manner within gravity. To acknowledge and elicit the spinal support of the organs, is to offer remembrance of the anterior cohesion of the organism in upright stance, taking strain off the spinal components and global musculature.

  • Developmental Movement Patterns and Spinal Support.
The emphasis in this Workshop will be an exploration of the ways in which the water based patterns of Vibration, Pulsation, Sponging, Breath, Naval Radiation, and the Pre-Spinal Patterns, support our midline. Whilst some land based patterns of Homologous, Homolateral, head-tail will also be explored, their pathways are compared and contrasted with the Fluid based patterns in exploring the functionality of the Spiral, which permeates our tissues.

  • Yoga and Spinal Embryology. Introduction to the Figure 8 and Spiralic Pathways of the Limbs in Spinal Support.
As we acknowledge our embryologic origins, we remember the original blueprint of our physicality. As we re-embody the original embryologic field, we generate a functionally mobile, strong fluid spine. One that is truly free to move with Grace, dignity, poise and play. The Figure 8 is work that I have developed in response to a significant spinal injury. Its application to asana, rebalances the natural curves within the sagittal plane of the body, addressing hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine, together with hyper and hypo lordosis of the lumbar spine (neither of which is functionally optimal).

Teacher Training, and Professional Development are available, as is Online Yoga Mentoring.
The next Teacher Training is scheduled as a flow on from either of the Workshop Events in Finland and/or Kent, and/or Brussels above.

From the Recent Brisbane Workshop at Shri Yoga, Brisbane, September 2018

“Dear Shri, Thank you so very much for offering this workshop. It was one of those experiences that changes something deep inside you. Deep gratitude for the participants who cultivated their yoga practice with challenging scoliosis and were willing to share their bodies and experiences with us. A deep, deep gratitude to Narelle for her heart, her commitment and extensive knowledge. Narelle's ability to transform her own body and share her ruthlessly compassionate Love, helped me understand what it is to be a true yogi and has deeply inspired my approach to teaching. Although I don't have scoliosis I have had some back challenges and I greatly appreciated learning for my own point of view. One of the true gifts of this workshop was seeing the transformation participants with scoliosis had working with Narelle's instructions. I would definitely do this workshop again both for myself and to become a better teacher. With much gratitude and appreciation.”

“I have just attended your workshop at Shri in Brisbane. It was an enlightening experience. And I came away surprised to have achieved such a shift in my body. This was completely unexpected. For the first time in decades I felt comfortable standing after class in contrast to my default desire to slump into a heap on the floor at any given opportunity. This discomfort in an upright posture has been so persistent that I had ceased to experience it as pain. It had become my body's white noise made suddenly conspicuous by its absence. I enjoyed so much to receive adjustments directed by internal sensation rather than the external, visible structures of the body alone. I find this type of direction so much more accessable. And I now understand why I do. Thank you for bringing your work to Brisbane and I would like to express my interest in further Teacher Training with you in the future. My passion for teaching has been reignited by this experience.”
- Amanda Benson

“The way you demonstrated, taught & spoke about the spine, brought " life " and meaning in a way that was both educational and personal. It was as though you were " inhabiting " our bodies as you guided us with sensitivity and from a place of immense personal experience and study. For me, your use of language was particularly revelatory and has allowed me to bring into play and think of every part of my body engaging as I move : the organs, not just " bone and muscle talk ". I sincerely hope the Brisbane yoga community will again have the gift of your presence and teaching. Kind wishes & gratitude.”
- Kerry Gallimore

“Thank you for your teachings and guidance over the weekend. I truly feel that I have stepped onto a new path - one that I have been searching for and thinking about for a while. It was wonderful to find a place of belonging within yoga. I am deeply inspired from the weekend and I thank you for your thoughtful and generous teaching.
